Everything’s coming up Iowa!

Today marks a historic day for the U.S., especially the state of Iowa. The Iowa Supreme Court rejected the state law banning same-sex marriage, opening the door to a constituional amendment that will be sent to voters. This state has a special place in my heart because I spent four years there, met some of the most important people in my life, and did most of the growing up that led me to become the person I am today. This makes me proud of the sometimes-underestimated state and its citizens. This is a small step (only 47 more states to go!) but I have faith that things will change for the better.

Since my life is slowly becoming more and more immersed in books (especially children’s), I think this quote from Dr. Suess is very fitting for a time like this.

Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind, don’t matter and those who matter, don’t mind.

On a sort-of related note, I’ll be traveling to Iowa City next week to see the Hold Steady and visit some of our old haunts. What a great start to the birthday week!
